In July 2017 our flame retardant fabric Selene-9 was tested and certified to ASTM F1506 (Standard Performance Specification for Flame Resistant and Arc Rated Textile Materials for Wearing Apparel for Use by Electrical Workers Exposed to Momentary Electric Arc and Related Thermal Hazards).
Selene-9 is a 320gsm (9oz) flame retardant fabric made of 88% cotton, 12% nylon. Selene-9 protects from Heat, Flame and Electric Arc. You can use it for protective clothing such as overall, jackets, trousers, aprons etc. Due to the durability of Nylon-cotton blend, FR-clothing made of Selene-9 lasts two times longer than one made of 100% cotton.
Standard ASTM F1506 regulates the design characteristics and associated test methods that relate specifically to the flame resistance of textile materials used in the fabrication of basic protection level occupational apparel worn by electrical workers who are exposed to momentary electric arc and related thermal hazards such as exposure to open flame and radiant heat. The main characteristics of the testing fabric are flammability and the level of protection against electric arc effects or ATPV (values of electric arc heat treatment). ATPV is determined by in accordance with ASTM F1959.
Selene-9 was tested to ASTM F1959 in February 2017 and showed the following results:
- ATPV 14,4 cal/cm2
- HAF (Heat Attenuation Factor) 83,0%.
Selene-9 was tested for all ASTM F1506 tests in original and after 25 washing cycles according to standard AATCC TM 135:2012, washing method 3 IV and trying type AIII.
The testing was done at independent international laboratory AITEX (Spain). According to standard ASTM F1506 our fabric has been successfully tested to the following tests:
- Flame Resistance of textiles (Vertical test)
Fabric and reflective striping utilized in the construction of flame-resistant garments shall be tested for flame resistance and shall have a char length of nor more than 152 mm and an afterflame of not more than 2 seconds, and shall not melt and drip.
Selene-9 in original, no washing
Warp | Weft |
After Glow time: 0,8s | After Glow time: 0,6s |
When testing Selene-9 fabric for flame resistance in original there were Zero After-flame time, no melting nor dripping for warp and weft direction.
Selene-9 after 25 washing cycles
Warp | Weft |
After Glow time: 0,6s Char length: 90,0mm | After Glow time: 0,6s Char length: 90,0mm |
When testing Selene-9 fabric for flame resistance after 25 washing cycles there were Zero After-flame time, no melting nor dripping for warp and weft direction.
- Determination of breaking strength and elongation
The standard ASTM F1506-10a:2010 recommends a minimum force of 223 N in both directions for fabrics whose weight is ≥ 288gsm.
- Selene-9
Warp: 809N (average elongation – 20.0%)
Weft: 607N (average elongation – 18.3%)
- Determination of tear resistance
The standard ASTM F1506-10a:2015 recommends a minimum force of 22 N in both directions for fabrics whose weight is 288gsm and higher.
- Selene-9 average resistance value
Warp: 39.0N
Weft: 41.7N
- Determination of slippage resistance of yarns in woven fabrics: seam method
The standard ASTM F1506-10a:2015 recommends a minimum force of 223 N in both directions to tissues whose weight is between 288gsm and higher.
- Selene-9 average value of slipping resistance
Warp: 287.4N
Weft: 328.8N
- Colour fastness to domestic and commercial laundering
The limit set by the Standard ASTM F1506:2015 for testing of colorfastness to washing is 3 for change in colour.
- Selene-9 colorfastness to washing:
4-5 (change in colors)
- Determination of dimensional change in domestic washing and drying
In accordance with the Standard ASTM F1506:2015, the dimensional change shall not exceed ± 3% in warp and ± 2% in weft for woven fabrics (Negative dimensional change indicates shrinkage).
- Selene-9 Dimensional change after 5 washing cycles
Warp: +0,8%
Weft: +0,9%
